Realignment plan approved by NHL Board

There will be a new two conference, four division format to the National Hockey League starting next season. The realignment plan, proposed last week, was approved by the NHL's Board of Governors. The new league setup will make it so that teams in the same time zones will be playing each other more often, thus meaning less travel and an easier schedule. As a result, the playoff format will also be changed.

The top three teams in each division will make-up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season points and regardless of division. It will be possible, then, for one division to send five teams to the postseason while the other sends three. - NHL.com
